Does PennyTalk Mobile work with all BlackBerry devices?

To use PennyTalk Mobile, your phone must be running BlackBerry Device Software v4.3 or higher. In addition, you must have a cellular service plan that includes voice (for making calls) and data connectivity (for downloading the app and accessing your account balance).

To check your software version, go to Tools/About on your phone. The app is designed to work with all devices, however as new devices and operating systems are introduced, this becomes more of a challenge. If you do encounter difficulties, please contact us at info@getpennytalk.com.

Is PennyTalk Mobile compatible with BlackBerry 6 OS?

Yes. The latest version of PennyTalk Mobile (version 1.3.0.0) is compatible. If you have a BlackBerry that uses BlackBerry 6 OS (the Torch 9800, for example), you can use PennyTalk Mobile for your international calls.

How do I get the free trial minutes?

After you install and open the PennyTalk Mobile app, choose the “Free Trial” option. Provide your mobile phone number and email address and choose a 4-digit PIN. You’ll receive $1 free credit for international calls. You will have 30 days to use your trial account balance. When your balance runs low, simply add funds to continue to enjoy PennyTalk’s low rates and quality connections. The free trial is offered exclusively with the PennyTalk Mobile app.

If you already have a PennyTalk account, install and open the PennyTalk Mobile app and choose the "Login" option. Login with your PennyTalk Account Number and PIN. The $1 trial amount will automatically be added to your balance. Close the app and make international calls using your PennyTalk balance.

Do I need to enable international calling or have an international calling plan on my BlackBerry?

PennyTalk Mobile requires that you have a domestic calling plan -- if you can make calls within the U.S. with your BlackBerry, you can use PennyTalk Mobile. There is no need to have your cellular service provider enable your phone for international calling and no need to have an international calling plan.

Are there any additional fees?

PennyTalk has a 99¢ monthly service fee charged on the monthly anniversary of your account activation. There are no monthly minimums, auto-refill requirements or recharge fees.

How can I be sure I’m using PennyTalk Mobile for international calls -- and not my cellular service plan?

When the PennyTalk Mobile app is on, international calls made on your BlackBerry are automatically carried by IDT's global network, saving you money on your call. There are two ways to tell whether you are calling with the PennyTalk Mobile app:

  • As your call is being connected, you will see the PennyTalk Mobile call status screen. It displays the international number you are calling.
  • You will also hear the message "Thank you for using PennyTalk Mobile." This lets you know that the call is going through the PennyTalk Mobile app.

How will I know my account balance?

If you are making a call, you will hear your account balance before the call is connected. To check your balance before making a call, open the PennyTalk Mobile app. The app's main screen will display your current balance. Your account balance is updated after each call.

Can PennyTalk Mobile be used for domestic calls?

No. The PennyTalk Mobile app can only be used for international calls. Use your regular cellular service plan for domestic calls. You can use your PennyTalk account to make domestic calls from other phones, including your home phone. For home dialing instructions, click here.

Can I use PennyTalk Mobile outside of the U.S.?

PennyTalk Mobile is designed to work in the United States for calls to other countries and NOT outside the U.S. We strongly recommend that you turn off the PennyTalk Mobile app when traveling outside the U.S. or U.S. territories. To turn off PennyTalk Mobile: (1) click on the PennyTalk icon to access the app; (2) go to the Settings screen and turn the app OFF; (3) click the SAVE button.

If you leave PennyTalk Mobile on when outside the U.S. and make an international or intra-country call, the app will complete the call by using a U.S. access number. In this case, your mobile service provider will charge you for the cost of a call to the U.S. and will likely charge you an international roaming fee. In addition, PennyTalk will charge you for the cost of the PennyTalk Mobile call. You are responsible for all of these charges.

Once you return to the U.S., be sure to turn PennyTalk Mobile on: (1) click on the PennyTalk icon to access the app; (2) go to the Settings screen and turn the app ON; (3) click the SAVE button.

Can I use Save-orites from the PennyTalk Mobile app?

Yes! You can use your Save-orites numbers with PennyTalk Mobile to make international calls. You save 20% off the per-minute rate and are not charged a connection fee.

Can I see my call history?

Yes. You can see your call history online in the PennyTalk Account Center. Log in with the Account Number and PIN you chose when you got your free minutes or when you signed up for your PennyTalk account. Your account number is most likely your cellular number; it can be found on the Settings screen of the app.

Will I be able to use PennyTalk from other phones in addition to my BlackBerry?

Yes. Once you sign up, you will be able to use PennyTalk from any phone in the U.S. including your home phone. Dialing instructions for calls from other phones can be found here. Enroll the other phones you’ll call from for No-PIN Dialing and Save-orites in the PennyTalk online account center and you’ll be dialing faster and saving even more!

Please note that the connection fee is waived only on calls made from the PennyTalk Mobile app.

What is the latest version of the PennyTalk Mobile app? How do I upgrade?

The latest version is 1.3.0.0, which was released on March 13, 2012. If you are using an earlier version and would like to upgrade, please follow these instructions:

  1. Open the app by clicking on the PennyTalk Mobile icon.
  2. Go to the Settings screen and note your Account Number and PIN. You'll need this information in Step 6.
  3. IMPORTANT: Delete the current version of PennyTalk Mobile from your BlackBerry.
  4. Go to the download page (pennytalk.com/bb) using your BlackBerry web browser and click the download link.
  5. After you have downloaded and installed PennyTalk Mobile, click on the penny icon to open the app.
  6. Go to the Login screen and enter your Account Number and PIN. Your account balance will be displayed on the main PennyTalk Mobile screen, and you'll be able to make calls.

If the PennyTalk Mobile app doesn't appear on your Home screen, check the Downloads folder on your BlackBerry. Your BlackBerry documentation should have instructions for moving the PennyTalk Mobile app to your Home screen.

I tried to make an international call but got an announcement telling me that PennyTalk was unable to process my request. What's wrong?

Most likely, your account balance is too low to complete the call. Check your account balance by opening the app. You can add funds to your account using the PennyTalk Mobile app on your BlackBerry. You can also add funds through the PennyTalk web site by logging in with your PennyTalk Account Number and PIN.

If you have sufficient funds in your account and cannot make an international call, please contact Customer Service at 1-888-311-8360 or send an email.

The message "There was a problem logging in (-2)" appeared on my phone display. What does this mean?

Your cellular signal may not be strong enough for PennyTalk Mobile to connect to the IDT network. Try calling from a location where you have better cellular reception.

Why don't I hear ringing after I dial the international number?

Occasionally you may experience a delay before your call connects. Please make sure that the phone number you dialed is correct and includes the country and city codes.

If the number is correct and you receive an error after dialing and waiting, please contact Customer Service by calling 1-888-311-8360 or by sending an email.

When I call a number with an automated menu, why can’t I access the menu options? I press the number keys but nothing happens.

To use an automated menu during a call, please exit the “PennyTalk Call Status” screen by pressing the ESC key on your BlackBerry. You should then be able to access and use the automated menu.

Why is the account balance displayed on the PennyTalk Mobile main screen different from the balance I hear when making a call?

The balance display on the PennyTalk Mobile main screen may not update if you exited the app by pressing the red “End” key. To ensure that your account balance is updated the next time you open the app, please use the “Escape” key whenever you exit. If you have a BlackBerry 8700, please use the “Convenience” key located below the scroll wheel to exit the app.

  2. Go to the Settings screen and note your Account Number and PIN. You'll need this information in Step 6.
